Wannabe Writers

Wannabe Writers is my weekly meme. It's a writing group for the un-published and anyone is welcome to join. It's a place where future authors can ask questions, share stories, and get feedback. Click (here) to find out how it works.

Where I am in the writing process: Right now I am 3,533 words in. I have created a new text on my side bar that contains my most recent update. Totally uninspired right now.

My current problem: Settling on a plot. There are about 5 different elements that I could add in right now but... I don't know if I should. There are also about 3 different endings I could have to but they are all half- decent but not amazing. Any solution?

Question this week:  How do you know when you're good enough?

My answer: You don't you write because you must. Because you have a passion for it and love what you are doing and what you have created with your little world. You write because the characters you created deserve an ending or the rest of the life you have set out for them. You write because you must.

Have fun writing and good luck on the 50k in 50 day challenge!!

  1. Plot elements: The best thing you can do is sit down and figure out exactly where you want your story to go. It doesn't have to be super detailed, but you have to at least have a basic idea of the plot all the way through. The story will grow on its own as you write, but if you don't have a skeleton, you'll be throwing words on without a backbone to structure them, and they'll end up oozing all over the place (ooh, I like that image!! :D ).

  2. I struggle with plot too. I haven't figure that one out. Amanda's advise sounds good to me. I usually just write and write and hope it goes in the right direction. Although, I do always have an idea for the ending so that I know where the ending point is but still. I need to figure this one out myself.

  3. Settling on the plot. Sometimes it helps to simply write it all out and see where it fits. I've written different scenes two or three different ways in the process of the first draft because I didn't like the way the first scene came out. In continuing to write, it all works itself out. Figure out where you want the story to go, but take into account where the characters want the story to go as well.

"write because you must" - love it!

  4. Great advice on the plot. Sometimes the only way is to experiment.

  5. I would say write the 3 endings out and then pick the one that resonates with you the most. That's JMO.
